Small antique betel nut box made in the Philippines. Late 18th to Early 19th c. Brass with inlaid copper. An exquisite decorative and historic piece. These boxes were used to store the ingredients for chewing betel nut, a common practice in Southeast Asia. The interior compartments originally held areca nut, betel nut and slaked limes.
