This piece is full of interesting history! Likely dating from the late 18th to early 19th c., it was made in a time when tea was a luxury item, hence the brass escutcheon on the front of the box. The word "caddy" comes from the Malay word "kati", a unit of measurement in the Asian spice and tea trade. The "sarcophagus" shape was popular during this time period, evoking its inspiration from classical Greek, Roman and Egyptian forms.
